If there’s something I couldn’t live without, it’s smoothies. I eat them all year round, even when it’s cold outside. When it gets super cold, like -30°C, I usually pair my smoothie with a cup of hot tea. Call me crazy, but I just love my smoothies that much! It’s like eating a salad with the taste of a dessert. What I love most about smoothies is how versatile and easy to make they are. You can throw pretty much anything into the blender, hold the button down, and voila – your smoothie is ready. Since I usually have my smoothie as a meal substitute, rather than just a healthy snack, I always try to include high-fiber carbohydrate, protein, and a healthy fat. Including all three macronutrients – carbohydrates, protein, and fat – is the most important thing when blending smoothies as a meal replacement. This combo will keep you full and energized until your next meal or snack. Once you understand the science behind the individual macronutrients, you’ll have no problem creating an infinite variety of meal-replacement smoothies whenever you want.
The Chocolate Ice Cream Smoothie is my go-to smoothie whenever I need something to fuel me after a workout. The combination is so simple, yet delicious. It’s nutrient dense, relatively high in protein, and the spinach adds a healthy spin without compromising the rich chocolate flavor. You can easily add more raw cacao powder to make the chocolate flavor in this smoothie even more prominent. While I call this recipe “for two”, there are definitely times I’ve eaten the whole thing faster than anyone has seen me make it.
